A new study suggests that a drug called sildenafil, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men, could be a valuable tool in the fight against the scourge of sexual side effects.
It will be released to doctors today, after a study of the drug found it to be superior to Viagra, a widely prescribed drug used to treat erectile dysfunction.
Researchers from the University of Manchester, led by Prof Andrew P. Evans of the University of Manchester, analysed data from a randomised trial, published last year.
They found sildenafil was as effective as Viagra in improving erectile function in a population of men with ED.
They concluded that the drug may be able to significantly increase sexual desire and arousal, and improve the effectiveness of sex-enhancing drugs such as Viagra and Cialis.
It is also being studied for use in men with low sexual desire, erectile dysfunction and other health problems.

The study, published online in the journalJAMA Internal Medicine,was a comparison of the effectiveness of two drugs, known as sildenafil and Cialis, in an 18,000-person, population.
Men were randomly assigned to one of the drugs or a placebo for a 12-week period. After the first week, the men who took the drugs had a lower incidence of ED than those who took a placebo.
After the second week, the incidence of ED was similar for the men who took the drugs and those who took the placebo.
This suggests that sildenafil, in treating ED, may have an important role in the treatment of ED, particularly for men who are less responsive to the effects of the drugs.
This is the first study to investigate the effects of sildenafil and Cialis in men with erectile dysfunction and other health problems.
The study was funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research, the NHS England and the Scottish Government Research and Innovation and Health Research Fund.
The study was published online inJAMAin May 2011.Dr Andrew Evans, head of research at the University of Manchester, said: "Sildenafil and Cialis have been developed to be highly effective and safe for treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) and may be an important part of the treatment of these conditions."
The drug has been in use in the treatment of erectile dysfunction since 1998.
Dr P. Evans, a professor of medicine at the University of Manchester, said: "This study demonstrates the potential of sildenafil in improving the effectiveness of erectile dysfunction treatment, and potentially reducing sexual risk in men."
He said: "I would be surprised if this is the first trial to investigate the use of sildenafil in treating ED and has found it to be superior to Viagra.
"I do not think it will be the first to find a cure for ED, and I suspect this will be the next one, with further trials looking into its effectiveness in the future."
Professor Evans added: "It is important that men who are taking sildenafil and taking other drugs for erectile dysfunction remain aware of the risks associated with their use and report any side effects to their doctor or healthcare provider."
He said: "There is currently no treatment for erectile dysfunction and it should only be a last resort for those who have low sexual desire.
"There is also not enough evidence to recommend sildenafil and Cialis for treatment of ED and there is a very high risk of side effects, including cardiovascular events, although these are rare."
Professor Evans said: "We believe that the use of sildenafil and Cialis in the treatment of ED may be a useful tool in the future.
"The benefits of sildenafil and the potential side effects of sildenafil may be significant in treating ED and could help to increase the number of men who use this treatment."
Dr Michael Connell, chief medical officer of the sexual health charity Sexual Advice, said: "The use of sildenafil and Cialis in the treatment of erectile dysfunction and other health conditions is still a topic of debate.
The MHRA was advised by the Department of Health (DOH) on the sale and distribution of counterfeit products, including those containing prescription drugs, by consumers across the UK.
“In light of the ongoing investigation by the MHRA into the counterfeit drug supply chain, we are pleased to announce the receipt of an agreement between the Department of Health (DOH) and Pfizer Inc. (Pfizer) to co-ordine the MHRA to ensure that those who supply genuine, high quality and authorised medicines are not inadvertently exposed to a potentially dangerous substance,” said the announcement. “Pfizer’s global operations are focused on developing and delivering medicines that are approved for use in the UK and EU and are clinically proven to treat a range of common conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and osteoarthritis, and are designed to be used safely and effectively.”
The MHRA has a clear and comprehensive warning label for all prescription and over-the-counter medicines and has a clear prescription label in its pack with the words “Pharmaceuticals,” “Pharmaceuticals,” “Pharmaceuticals” or “Pharmaceuticals”. These medicines are not meant to be used for medical purposes or to be used in contravention of any drug regulatory requirements.
The MHRA’s notification, however, does not apply to counterfeit drugs.
The MHRA is concerned about the risks of counterfeit drugs, especially when they are sold to unsuspecting consumers.
According to a recent study by the Institute for the Study of Drug Safety and Quality (IPSRQ), there were 449 counterfeit medicines in the UK in 2020, with a total of 9.1 million counterfeit medicines sold.
The study looked at a sample of 715 medication samples from 474 individuals across the UK, from which the most commonly prescribed medicines were found. The most commonly prescribed medicines were:
